This website provides support and additional free resources to teachers using the interactive activities provided by SUMS Fractions.

Lesson 1. What we mean by a "fraction".
Objective. To assist the student to become familiar with the written representation of fractions, both in numerical and word form. Also to create familiarity with a common way of representing fractions as pictures. The fractions covered range from 1/2 through to 7/8.
Before using electronic resources, students should first experience fractions of real shapes using practical activities in the classroom. Once that has been done, the SUMS Fractions 1 activity can help students to understand how fractions of a two dimensional shape are represented on paper/screen.

The first screen should be used to explain how a shape is divided into equal parts, and then some of them are shaded (i.e. not white). The teacher might ask students to produce their own examples for other simple fractions before moving on.

The Fractions 1 activity asks the student to drag a numerical fraction (here 1/5) to the matching picture. If a mistake is made then the student is told and asked to move the numerical fraction to the correct place.

Once a correct answer is achieved, it is shown as correct and all pictures are given a label in words. The activity selects and displays fractions randomly.
