Teach Fractions (9)

Lesson 9. Subtraction of fractions.
Objective. To teach the student how fractions are subtracted by first converting them to a common denominator. Also to show how working should be set out clearly.
The activity is designed to provide a reliable method and way of setting out for the student to follow later when working with pen and paper.

The first screen should be used to explain the steps needed to solve a typical problem. Ensure that the student is familiar with the addition of fractions (SUM Fractions 8) before moving on to subtraction, which is a trivial step on for simple fractions.

The activity asks the student to supply the missing numbers at each stage. Here the student is being asked to supply the missing common denominator (12). At every stage an incorrect answer leads to a useful prompt.

In the screenshot below the student has nearly completed the question. The first 20 questions are structured so that the challenges get harder, and then additional questions appear in random order.
