Teach Fractions (8)
page 1
Lesson 8. Addition of fractions.
Objective. To teach the student how fractions are added by first converting them to a common denominator. Also to show how working should be set out clearly.
The activity is designed to provide a reliable method and way of setting out for the student to follow later when working with pen and paper.

The first screen should be used to explain the steps needed to solve a typical problem. It is not necessary to over-focus on the selection of the correct Lowest Common Denominator (Least Common Denominator). The student just needs to know that they need a number that both denominators go into, and that the smaller it is, the better it is.

The activity asks the student to supply the missing numbers at each stage. Here the student has already supplied the common denominator (6) and is now about to supply the missing number shown with a question mark. At every stage an incorrect answer leads to a useful prompt.

In the screenshot below the student has nearly completed the question. The first 20 questions are structured so that the challenges get harder, and then additional questions appear in random order.
