Lesson 7. Convert top heavy (improper) fractions into mixed numbers. |
SUMS Fractions 7 video guide (YouTube) |
Objective. To encourage the student to become adept at converting fractions in top-heavy (improper) form to their mixed fraction equivalents. |
The activity is designed to encourage students to increase their speed of solution once they have mastered the basic skill. In each case there are 6 pairs of fractions to be matched. |
The first screen should be used to introduce terminology. Also to show graphically why a top-heavy fraction (improper fraction) can be converted to a whole number and a fractional part. When working through examples with students it is important that they are able to work in both directions. That is, sometimes to start with a mixed number, and sometimes to start with the top-heavy (improper) fraction. |

The activity sets a simple challenge. Students might first pick the simplest cases and match them, leaving harder cases until there are fewer possibilities. The questions become a little more challenging after the first few examples. If a pair is incorrectly matched, the item on the lefthand side simply springs back into place. |

As questions are correctly answered, the righthand side boxes show both sides of the pairings. That reinforces learning. The aim is not just to teach the student how to work out equivalents, but to make the student quick and fluent in doing so. |
