Teach Fractions (4)
page 1
Lesson 4. Know common sets of equivalent fractions.
Objective. To encourage the student to learn common sets of equivalent fractions. To give them the confidence in this area that will help them later when manipulating fractions on harder tasks such as addition and subtraction of fractions.
This is set out as an enjoyable and challenging game needing both mental skills and careful use of the screen controls. The student has to learn which fractions are equivalent to each other if they are to achieve a good score.

The first screen should be used to introduce what is meant by "equivalent fractions". The screen pictures can be used to show why 1/2 and 2/4 and 3/6 are the same amount etc. The workings below show how a simple fraction like 2/3 can be taken and made into any desired equivalent fraction by multiplication.

The Fractions 4 activity is a game where lots of fractions fall down the screen. The student has to catch only those which are equivalent. Before each game the first few fractions in the required set are shown to help the student.

In the screenshot below the student has so far successfully caught only fractions that are in the desired set. Once the jar has caught ten fractions the game separates correct and incorrect catches and gives a score. The next challenge is then set up.
