Teach Fractions (10)
page 1
Lesson 10. Multiplication of fractions.
Objective. To teach the student how fractions are multiplied. To teach how to cancel common factors before multiplying out the numerators and denominators. Also to show how working should be set out clearly.
The activity is designed to provide a reliable method for the student to follow later when working with pen and paper. Three cases are covered, including questions where two pairs of numerator/denominator cancel.

The first screen should be used to explain the general principles of multiplying two fractions. The student should also be introduced to the idea that numbers on the top line and bottom line can be simplified (i.e. cancelled) before the multiplication is completed.

The activity first presents examples where no simplification (cancellation) is possible. It then presents cases like the one below where one pair of numbers can be simplified (cancel). In this case the student has to first identify the correct pair, and then supply the new numbers.

The activity also has many examples like the one in the screenshot below where there are two stages to the simplification (cancellation). The first 30 questions are structured to give a good mix of question types.
